The Regional Economic Development Agency was established by the Central Provincial Council by Proclamation No. 1 of 2008 upon the termination of the Sri Lanka German Cooperation Program in 2007.
This institution and the provincial institution in which the state and the private sector participate are unique institutions that implement various development projects such as investment promotion and promotion of regional, small center and large-scale enterprises.
The Central Province is not second to any of the provinces in the country as far as the human, physical and environment resources are concerned. In spite of the rich resource base, the public sector together with the private sector still could contribute only around eight percent to the Gross Domestic Production of the country. Analyses show that a number of hindering factors has lead to create this disadvantage situation.Therefore, it is necessary to take some dynamic remedies to clear these factors, if one expects a remarkable positive change in the economy of the Central Province.

The general objective of the REDA is to enhance the regional economy through strengthening of the development initiatives of the private and public sectors. More specifically REDA supports to improve quality, market volume, profit margins of regional economic development initiatives of the Central Province and elsewhere in the country.

With the end of the Sri Lanka German Cooperation Program in 2007, the Regional Economic Development Institute was established by the Central Provincial Council’s Charter No. 1 of 2008.
To provide opportunities for young people who cannot get higher education to get employment at home and abroad under formal training.
The Kandy Tourism Information Center was started on February 18, 2016 with the participation of the Central Province Tourism Department and the Regional Economic Development Institute, with the participation of the Kandy Hoteliers Association, with the participation of the public sector and the private sector for the promotion of tourism in the Central Province.
This information training center is currently implementing a number of different courses and programs. Among these courses, the advanced certificate course in information technology, which is being implemented under a concessional fee system jointly with the Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy, takes a leading position.
